Best oil for Toyota Tundra
Should you use synthetic oil?
1. Are you eager to change your oil? If the manual says to change your oil every 5,000 miles, did you change the oil at 4999.9 miles?
If you follow a strict oil change program, you may not benefit from synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is very resistant to degradation and sludge formation. However, most oil will not fail unless there is excessive time and/or mileage between changes. Since most of the benefits of synthetic oil over normal oil will only become apparent when the oils are exposed to adverse conditions, you really will not see any benefits from synthetic oil if you do not stress the oil.
However, if you are the kind of person who could forget to change the oil (shame on you), or if you may not be able to change your oil directly at 5,000 miles, you can buy a small insurance policy against engine damage by using synthetic oil.
2. Do you go a long time between the oil changes? An example: My grandmother, who drives a few thousand miles a year (less than the Toyota recommended 5000 miles between oil changes), uses synthetic material. Why? Because their oil can be more than a year between changes.
Unlike natural oil, synthetic oil lasts more than 6 months without loss of efficiency. Therefore, if you (or someone in your family) probably exceed the 6 months between the changes, synthetic oil makes sense for you.
3. Heavy load users. When natural oil gets hot, it begins to break down. The longer natural oil stays hot, the worse it will break down. If you regularly operate your car so that the engine temperature is always high, you should go synthetic. Â For example:
- An engine idling for long periods of time can overheat. The car is in static condition and the engine is not blown around with air. In this case, excessive heat can build up and normal oil will collapse. Long engine runs in abnormal heat or at high altitude will cause the engine temperature to rise. Synthetic is not a bad idea even for high altitude residents.
- Extreme low temperatures (-10F or below) cause natural oils to degrade quickly.
- Racing, daily towing or pulling or aggressive off-roading can lead to high engine temperatures. Transporting the boat to the lake and back once a month is probably not qualified, but towing the Bobcat to and from the site five days a week is definitely qualified.
- They burn a lot of E-85, which tends to form acids that wear natural oils slightly faster. Learn more about this problem here.
4. Your personal situation may require this. Some experts recommend synthetic oil in stop-and-go traffic. While I disagree with this blanket statement (we all drive a little stop and go), you might want to drive synthetically if your typical drive has as much stopped as go.
5. Short distances. Short distances require certain solutions. One is to use synthetic oil. The theory is that synthetic coatings cover the engine better than natural oil in a short period of time and thus protect it better for short trips.
In my opinion, if you only drive short distances, synthetic oil will not save your engine. Short distances are bad because the engine never reaches full operating temperature, and that causes a variety of problems (increased corrosion in the exhaust system, poor fuel economy, increased oil wear, etc.).
Hence, my advice to people who only drive short distances: Stop it. Plan your journeys so that your vehicle has a good 15 minutes driving time. If you cannot, buy a cheap old car that you do not care about to take you to and from work every day. It is better than disguising the engine in your truck.

Beware of synthetic mixtures
If you choose synthetic oil, you should be aware of the "synthetic blends". While many manufacturers have a synthetic blend as their standard oil, the term "synthetic blend" is not regulated. Any mixture of normal and synthetic oil is considered a mixture, even if it is only 1% synthetic and 99% regular. If it is not a manufacturer-supplied oil (e.g. Motorcraft, Goodwrench, Original Toyota Motor Oil, etc.) then it could be a very small percentage of synthetic oil.
Some companies will indicate the percentage of synthetic vs. natural-synthetic oil, but you would be surprised if you found that big names like Valvoline, Penzoil, Quaker State, etc. have very low proportions of synthetic oil in their "synthetic oil blends".

HOW DOES CAR ENGINE OIL WORK?
By lubricating the engine the oil is not simply keeping it running smoothly, it is protecting it and preventing damage.
The new oil type ILSAC GF-4 will soon be on the shelves instead of the current GF-3. This is a harder specification for the oil and requires higher quality (more expensive) ingredients. Some oil manufacturers mix low quality (cost) conventional oil with synthetic oil as a correction fluid to meet the specification and trumpet it as a synthetic blend. That is it, but it is nothing special. An equally good or perhaps better oil can be made from higher quality (cost) conventional oil. ConocoPhillips is one of the oil manufacturers that uses this cheap synthetic blend to obtain its GF-4 oil at the lowest production cost. Their brands are Conoco, Phillips, 76, & Kendall.
There is not much difference between a 0/20 and a 5/20. If they are of the same basic type and company, the 0/20 will lead to a fractional reduction in wear factors at cold start, while the 5/20 will last slightly longer.
If you want to be fussy, try the 0/20 in winter and the 5/20 in summer or just mix the two and make it 2.5/20!
Best oil for 2012 toyota tundra
What Toyota says about synthetics?
Toyota's official policy is, "Any oil that meets API standard specifications can be used in your vehicle." In other words, normal "natural" engine oil is fine. You can use 5W-20 in an engine designed for 0W-20 without fear of a problem (or vice versa).
There are rumors that Toyota does not guarantee your vehicle if you use the "wrong" oil, if you switch from synthetic to natural (and back again), etc., or if you use the "wrong" oil. This is all BS. The truth is:
It is against the law that Toyota prescribes a certain brand or type of oil that is used as a condition of warranty. You can only specify that API-certified oil may be used.
If you do not use the oil, it is Toyota's responsibility to prove that this non-specific oil has caused a problem so that they can invalidate your warranty.
Believe it or not, you can extend the manufacturer's suggested oil change interval at will. If you work with particularly good oil and if you impregnate your engine, you will find that after 15k+ miles your oil will work as it should. While I would never recommend this particular decision, you can also choose your own oil change interval.
Toyota tundra oil type
In summary, Toyota has nothing to say about synthetic oil. They recommend plastics for newer engines because they improve fuel consumption and lower operating costs…not because plastics are significantly better.
After all, plastics are only better than natural oil in certain situations…right?
If you choose regular oil, change it every 5,000 miles, but still use one of the best filters (Amsoil, mobil1, pureone).
However, wait until you reach 10,000 miles with normal oil until you start using synthetic material. You will get better fuel life on the front. With a diesel engine (vs. gas), it is much more critical to wait up to 10k.
If you use synthetic oil, but do not change the intervals to 10,000 miles or more, it will be more expensive and you will throw away good oil. It is like throwing away tires when only half the tread is worn out. There may be good reasons for some people to do this, but it is a waste of perfect performance for most people.

Toyota Tundra motor oil recommendations
- Only Toyota vehicles requiring 0w-20 synthetic oil (except 3UR-FBE engines*) have been approved for extended oil change intervals of 10,000 miles/12 months. (However, you should continue to check the oil level regularly and top it up if necessary. This will help your engine take full advantage of the synthetic oil.)
- Vehicles where 0w-20 is an option on 5w-20 mineral oil (or 5w-30) will still require 5,000 miles/6 months oil change intervals even if 0w-20 oil is used.
- For vehicles with 10,000-mile oil change intervals, the 5,000-mile maintenance interval has not been eliminated. Traditional 5,000-mile maintenance procedures (e.g. tire rotation) will continue to be required and fluid levels (e.g. brake fluid) will need to be checked and adjusted at this time.
- Does the vehicle operation meet the standard criteria for "Special Operating Conditions" such as: When driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, repeated short trips at 32Ëš F or extended idling, the engine oil must be changed at intervals of 5,000 miles, regardless of the type of oil used.
Toyota Tundra engine oil type
It is important to note that if you drive a Toyota Tundra or Toyota Sequoia equipped with a Flex fuel compatible engine, the 10,000-mile oil change interval has NOT been approved by Toyota. Some engines will be tuned for operation with 5w-20 mineral oil, but can safely use 0w-20 synthetic oil.
Engine oil grades for Toyota Tundra
Mobil 1 does make a 0w-20. It's called mobil 1 advanced fuel economy and can be found a lot of places.
